Statement by the Hong Kong Association of Doctors in Clinical Psychology on the Taikoo Shing Tragedy
The Hong Kong Association of Doctors in Clinical Psychology expresses profound sorrow and concern regarding the tragic incident that occurred in Taikoo Shing on June 9, 2026, involving the loss of two lives from the same family. The event has deeply affected the family concerned, the school community, and the wider public.
The sudden and traumatic loss of a loved one—particularly in circumstances involving suicide—can have a profound psychological impact, especially on children and adolescents. Survivors often experience intense shock, grief, guilt, anger, helplessness, and self-blame. Without timely and sustained professional support, the risks of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, anxiety, complicated grief, and self-harm may increase significantly.
The Association extends its deepest condolences to the bereaved family and urges relatives, friends, neighbors, and relevant authorities to provide proactive, continuous, and practical support during this extraordinarily difficult time.
Following a major traumatic event, it is common and normal to experience emotional and physical reactions such as fear, sadness, guilt, sleep disturbances, intrusive memories, difficulty concentrating, and mood fluctuations. To promote psychological and emotional recovery, the Association recommends:
Attend to basic needs: Maintain regular routines, adequate sleep, and proper nutrition. Avoid prolonged isolation. Stabilizing daily rhythms supports recovery.
Ensure continuous companionship: Individuals directly affected—especially children and adolescents—should receive close supervision, consistent presence, and emotional reassurance.
Limit repeated media exposure: Avoid repeatedly viewing or sharing distressing details, particularly for vulnerable individuals.
Allow healthy emotional expression: Encourage expressing feelings through conversation, writing, prayer, or light exercise rather than suppressing them or relying on alcohol or substances.
Identify warning signs early: Persistent hopelessness, intense self-blame, or thoughts of self-harm warrant immediate professional attention.
The Association calls upon schools, employers, and community organizations to activate crisis support measures, provide safe spaces for sharing, and ensure ongoing follow-up rather than short-term intervention only.
If members of the public feel distressed or require assistance, please contact the following support services in Hong Kong:
Government Mental Health Support Hotline: 18111 (24-hour emotional support service)
The Samaritan Befrienders Hong Kong: 2389 2222 (24-hour Chinese emotional support hotline)
Social Welfare Department 24-hour Hotline: 2343 2255 (After-office hours are seamlessly transferred to emergency social worker support)
The Hong Kong Association of Doctors in Clinical Psychology urges the community to respond with empathy and solidarity, and to strengthen collective efforts in crisis support and suicide prevention to safeguard mental well-being.
